Methoxybenzoic acid, also known as p-anisic acid, 4-anisic acid, or large anisic acid, appears as colorless needle-like crystals at room temperature. It is soluble in ethanol, ether, and chloroform, slightly soluble in hot water, and hardly soluble in cold water. It is used to produce p-methoxybenzoyl chloride, an intermediate for the synthesis of amiodarone, through the chlorination of thionyl chloride. Methoxybenzoic acid serves as an intermediate for the pharmaceutical compound perampanel and can also be used as a fragrance and preservative.
